Founded by the Spanish in 1531, the old port city of Campeche stands apart from other cities in Mexico due to its unique colonial remains. The city exhibits the remains of what was once a completely walled settlement. It contains forts and bastions once used to fend off various pirate attacks (one of which actually destroyed the city completely in 1663 before the fortifications were constructed).

This remarkable colonial city contains a line of walls in the form of a rectangle, similar to the historic downtown areas of Mexico City, Puebla and Oaxaca. These unique remains were recently declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998 (1999?)

Thanks to extraordinary conservation measures, the city is revered with pride by not only by its inhabitants, but by the whole of the Yucatan Peninsula. It is often referred to as "the cleanest city in Mexico" and is also considered one of the safest, surprising for a country such as Mexico.

Traffic is kept to a minimum and public busses are not allowed in the central city zone. It is known around Mexico for its tranquil, easygoing environment. Journey through this amiable city by foot or on bicycle and relish in its peaceful atmosphere.

Most of the ancient forts and bastions that once protected the city have been turned into museums, one of which has a botanical garden not to be missed. Visit one or more of these ancient structures such as: Fuerte de San Miguel, Fuerte de San Luis, Baluarte de San Carlos, Baluarte de la Soledad, Baluarte de Santiago and Baluarte de San Pedro. The museums contain in-depth information on the city's history as well provide information regarding Mayan life and culture.

Aside from the Old City there is a seaside boardwalk with a bicycle route, fishing pier (where you may take part in volunteer activities with local fishermen) and a small morning market. The well-lit waterfront area is an easy-going and enjoyable nighttime locale, popular with locals and visitors alike.
